I have been attending “Dr. Sketchy” here in Philly at Fleisher Art Memorial. These are “alternative” life drawing/social gatherings that have popped up in many cities around the globe. They are much fun.
At the December session, this was one of the sketches I made from our models, and was noted as “art monkey of the month” -- more painting and drawing on my blog (below)

Pani
Our baby girl turned one on January 30, 2009. For those of you who don’t know, Pani is our Great Dane/Lab puppy we adopted at 6 1/2 weeks last March... and my how she has grown. She currently stands about 32” inches at the shoulder, weighs about 100 lbs., and has yet to learn that she’s not a lap dog. : ) - Margaret Helthaler

Man Trys to pay bill with Spider Drawing (submitted by Marsha Devine )

Here are the winners of this year's Washington Post's Mensa Invitational which once again asked readers to take any word from the dictionary, alter it by adding, subtracting, or changing one letter, and supply a new definition :
- Cashtration (n.): The act of buying a house, which renders the
subject financially impotent for an indefinite period of time. - Ignoranus: A person who is both stupid and an a******.
- Intaxication: Euphoria at getting a tax refund, which lasts until
you realize it was your money to start with. - Reintarnation: Coming back to life as a hillbilly.
- Bozone (n.): The substance surrounding stupid people that stops
bright ideas from penetrating. The bozone layer, unfortunately, shows
little sign of breaking down in the near future. - Foreploy: Any misrepresentation about yourself for the purpose of getting laid.
- Giraffiti: Vandalism spray-painted very, very high
- Sarchasm: The gulf between the author of sarcastic wit and the person who doesn't get it.
- Inoculatte: To take coffee intravenously when you are running
late. - Osteopornosis: A degenerate disease. (This one got extra credit.)
- Karmageddon: It's like, when everybody is sending off all these
really bad vibes, right? And then, like, the Earth explodes and it's
like, a serious bummer. - Decafalon (n.): The grueling event of getting through the day
consuming only things that are good for you. - Glibido: All talk and no action.
- Dopeler Effect: The tendency of stupid ideas to seem smarter when
they come at you rapidly. - Arachnoleptic Fit (n.): The frantic dance performed just after
you've accidentally walked through a spider web. - Beelzebug (n.): Satan in the form of a mosquito, that gets into
your bedroom at three in the morning and cannot be cast out. - Caterpallor (n.): The color you turn after finding half a worm in
the fruit you're eating.
The Washington Post has also published the winning submissions to its
yearly contest in which readers are asked to supply alternate meanings
for common words. And the winners are:
- Coffee, n. The person upon whom one coughs.
- Flabbergasted, adj. Appalled by discovering how much weight one
has gained. - Abdicate, v. To give up all hope of ever having a flat stomach.
- Esplanade, v. To attempt an explanation while drunk.
- Willy-nilly, adj. Impotent.
- Negligent, adj. Absentmindedly answering the door when wearing only
a nightgown. - Lymph, v. To walk with a lisp.
- Gargoyle, n. Olive-flavored mouthwash.

been run over by a steamroller. - Balderdash, n. A rapidly receding hairline.
- Testicle n. A humorous question on an exam.
- Rectitude, n. The formal, dignified bearing adopted by
proctologists. - Pokemon, n. A Rastafarian proctologist.
- Oyster, n. A person who sprinkles his conversation with
yiddishisms. - Frisbeetarianism, n. The belief that, after death, the soul flies
up onto the roof and gets stuck there. - Circumvent, n. An opening in the front of boxer shorts worn by
Jewish men.

The Talking Frog
Phil loves to fish. He was sitting in his boat the other day, when he heard a voice say, "Pick me up." He looked around and couldn't see any one. He thought he was dreaming when he heard the voice say again, "Pick me up." He looked in the water and there, floating on top of a lilly pad, was a frog. Phil said, "Are you talking to me?" The frog said, "Yes, I'm talking to you. Pick me up then kiss me and I'll turn into the most beautiful woman you have ever seen. I'll make sure that all your friends are envious and jealous, because, I will be your bride!" Phil looked at the frog for a short time, reached over, picked it up carefully, and placed it in his front shirt pocket. Then the frog said, "What, are you nuts? Didn't you hear what I said? I said kiss me and I will be your beautiful bride." He opened his pocket, looked at the frog and said, "Nah, at my age I'd rather have a talking frog."

Last Fall we moved into a 1894 Historical Storybook house. It has 21 rooms--all needing extensive work!! We've used 23 gallons of paint so far!
During the break, I started the renovation on my 3rd floor studio. Hereis a before and after picture. My students thought it was very cool!
I also did a books signing at the Syracuse Bookfest, Sponsored by the UnitedWay to promote Literacy. Here is a picture of me signing book with other author/illustrators.
Also, I attached is a postcard of a new picture book I illustrated. This Katiebook came out last Fall-- in both English and Spanish.

Genius Assignment
One definition of 'genius' is said to be the ability to see or notice unlikely (visual) similarities where most see none. Some say it is the mark of genius to have more relaxed categories about things, about what is visually "like" and what is "unlike", etc.
Here are some of the better samples from the "genius assignment" I assign to my 2-D Design, Experiencing Art and The Image and the Eye students. For me, the comparisons that work best seem to link radically different frames of reference through visual similarity.
Give these a look: http://www.veronadesign.biz/genius-assignment.html (scroll down)

Who Says Design Students Need to Know How to Draw?
designboom.com/eng/interview/barber_osgerby.html
Excerpt from interview:
edward barber and jay osgerby
what advice would you give to the young?
b: keep working. work really, really hard. I mean it's serious
work! don't study for too long. just get started and get working.
o: I think so too. the most important thing is to get
more experience. pester designers, not us! (laughs)
other designers. go and get a work placement.
it's really the only real way you're going to get ahead.
b: and actually, don't stop sketching. forget computers
and just draw.
o: yes! learn to sketch! that's the number one thing.
so many kids we see today just can't draw anymore.
it's horrendous isn't it? so I think, sketching. simple.

Vanishing Point: the Art Gallery of the AiPOD Learning Centers

Call for artists!
Next show: “Abstraction”
We are looking for students to submit their very best Illustrator, Photoshop or InDesign
artwork for exhibition, based on the concept of abstraction. The work may be completely abstract or address the concept of abstraction in some manner. Submissions may be art or design pieces from class, or something you created outside of school.
We are looking for work that exhibits creativity and a high level of craftsmanship. This is a great opportunity for you to share your work, and to add an exhibition to your resume.
The exhibition is juried. The opening date is still to be determined, but the sooner we
have a body of student work to show, the sooner we will open the doors to this exhibition!
Please visit the Vanishing Point Gallery in the Learning Centers for more information
What is this gallery all about? The “Vanishing Point” student art gallery is a feature of the AiPOD Learning Centers. We will be exhibiting several new shows a year of the best student work made partially or completely with Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. This is a great opportunity for students to practice preparing files digitally for exhibition, and to also have exhibition experience on their resume. We are looking for student work and exhibiting on an ongoing basis.
Where is it?
You can find the gallery in the Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator Learning Centers

Online Collections
Hi All,
I just wanted to share this with you. On taking this full-time gig I left my position with SFMOMA, but one of the final projects that I was involved in is quite cool and might be a good resource for you and your students. They updated the website and created a very interesting way to browse the images of the collection online (my involvement as the digital asset manager was to routinely deliver the constantly growing number of images "we" produced of the collection and to develop a routine for this collaboration between the imaging department and the web department).
Below is the link to the page where you launch the "Artscope", a visual way to browse the artworks than your usual search method found on many museum sites. You can still do straight-up searches, but the Artscope gives you a more dynamic entry to the painting and sculpture, media arts, photography, and architecture + design collection.
