The all-in-one HP j5780 from EDMC arrived and is set up. However, it is slow to scan with few controls, I don't need the fax, and I much prefer the pigmented ink of the Epson C88 - so back in the box it will go. I could use a new scanner - mine is old and I'm sure isn't giving me the quality I want. Recommended? Canon CanoScan 8800F Color Film/Negative/Photo Scanner (2168B002)
letter from Laura Cabrini:
My name is Laura Cabrini, born to Luciano from Cavo Carbonara Po.
My father used to talk to me about our relatives who lived in America. Supposedly they had come to Italy about ten years ago, but he did not have a chance to meet them because they were not made aware of his existence by our other relatives.
My father died in a car accident about six years ago. He was born to Luigi Cabrini and Alda Dachecchi. Other Cabrini family members included Damasco, Malachia and Antonio. Today the only survivors are Onesta, Mario and Giuseppina, all siblings of my father Luciano.
I can barely read English, but I am much better off with Spanish. I am very happy to be able to communicate with you and I would like to send you a picture of mine and at least one of the uncles and aunts. These pictures will hopefully remind Mrs. Melba of her native land and her childhood and adolescence years, which always bear the dearest memories.
A big hug to all of you from Laura Cabrini and Ida Cabrini Bresciani.

There's 'magic' in the air, so try breathing exercises
By Jennifer E. O'Brien
NEW YORK TIMES NEWS SERVICE
December 4, 2007
What's the fitness/mental health secret that won't cost you a cent and doesn't require any fancy equipment or awkward poses? Breathing.
OK, we know you already do that. But we're talking about meditative breathing, which involves thinking about and focusing on your breath. It's harder than you think, but the results are well worth it.
In the short term, it can help you to de-stress in a moment and clear your head. An extended practice can help lower your blood pressure and stress levels.
Cathy Prescott, a registered yoga teacher who teaches adult, prenatal and mom and baby classes in Albany, N.Y., finds that meditative breathing can definitely be challenging for new students.
“It's hard to just stop – it goes against the nature of our society,” she says.
For home practice, Prescott recommends students find a quiet spot where they can sit and just concentrate on their breath and try to clear out distracting thoughts for five minutes. For some students, counting their breaths – “Inhale 1, Exhale 1” – helps to keep them focused on their breathing.
“Set a timer,” she says, “because five minutes will seem much longer to you.”
While sitting and breathing might seem tedious, the health benefits are numerous, Prescott says.
In taking deep breaths, also known as “belly breathing,” you can slow your breath, which will in turn slow down your heart rate. When breathing deep into the diaphragm, Prescott explains, you can massage the vagus nerve, which will stimulate relaxation.
Harriett Rubinstein, a licensed clinical social worker in upstate New York, often recommends the technique to clients who are dealing with anxiety or stress.
In the short term, meditative breathing can help you to de-stress. Rubinstein has found that the long-term benefits are that she is better able to focus and be relaxed throughout her day.
“It takes yoga off the mat,” explains Megan Fulwiler, a College of Saint Rose professor who has been practicing yoga “on and off” for the past seven years. While she practices meditative breathing both in yoga class and at home, Fulwiler has also found that her practice has given her tools to use throughout her day.
“The deep breath is one of the best tools we have – it returns you to the present.”

Kunstkammer, which translated literally means art chamber, can be traced to Central Europe in the mid-sixteenth century, when it was used to describe private collections of paintings and precious artifacts presented as objects of scholarship and wonder. The early Kunstkammer often combined works of art with scientific apparatus and products of nature.
When he arrived at the church, members were indeed expecting him. Then João lost consciousness. When he woke up a few hours later, he apologized for passing out and explained it was due to hunger. Risky exercises can be replaced with much safer alternatives

Mark Reinking is an assistant professor of physical therapy at St. Louis University, so he knows a thing or two about exercise. But even he's baffled by some of the things people do at the gym. Not only does he see people put themselves at risk for injury, but he also can't figure out the purpose of some of the exercises.
Baked Corn Chex 'N' Cheese Custard
On Sept. 8, 1670, a day of fasting was proclaimed in Boston. It was the first recorded proclamation of a fast day in the British colonies.
Eventually nearly all of the New England colonies would establish annual fast days on which the citizenry was expected to refrain from secular activities. This did not mean people couldn't eat anything. The intent was to avoid extravagance and festivity. Meals were expected to be plain and simple. Baked beans was a likely menu item.
The Puritans, who strictly avoided working on the Sabbath, buried pots of beans and other foods in coals to cook slowly so they would not have to do the work of lighting a fire on the Sabbath. That, however, does not fully explain the origin of baked beans.
Some historians believe the Bostonians copied the practice from Jewish people who also cooked beans in coals to avoid lighting fires on their day of worship. Sailors traveling to Boston from Africa and the Mediterranean region may have been introduced to the practice by Sephardic Jews.
Other historians believe baked beans were introduced by the French, famous for their cassoulets and other bean dishes.
These two theories fail to address the trademark flavorings of Boston baked beans – pork and sweetness.
The current most favored theory notes that American Indians cooked beans with maple syrup and bear fat. Never wasting fuel, they slow-cooked the beans in coals. Adapting that method to incorporate molasses and pork fat would have been a matter of convenience.
Traditional Boston baked beans are cooked at a low temperature for 7 to 8 hours. I usually opt to bake the beans at a higher temperature for a shorter period, but I much prefer the taste of the slow-cooked method.
In this version, I have combined molasses and maple syrup and substituted bacon for pork back. For fun, you may want to do what the Puritans did, which is to have the baked beans for breakfast.
Old-Fashioned Boston Baked Beans
8 servings
6 cups cooked or canned white beans, drained and rinsed
4 slices bacon, cut into 1-inch pieces
1 onion, peeled and finely diced
3/4 cup pure maple syrup
1/4 cup dark molasses
1 tablespoon prepared mustard
1/2 teaspoon or more salt
Preheat oven to 250 degrees. Mix together all of the ingredients in a large bowl. Pour the mixture into a flat baking dish. Pour enough water into the dish to cover the bean mixture. Cover the dish with foil or a lid. Bake for 5 hours. Remove the cover and bake 1 more hour.
You may also bake the beans at 350 degrees for 3 hours covered and 35 minutes uncovered.
Beans may be served immediately or reheated for later use.

Gifted Hands by BenCarson, M.D., with Cecil Murphey
Zondervan Publishing House
Separating conjoined twins, pioneering radical brain surgery to stop intractable seizures, and speaking at the 1997 President's National Prayer Breakfast are among the accomplishments of Dr. Ben Carson. But his life wasn't always so prestigious. Raised in inner-city Detroit by a mother with a third-grade education, young Ben lacked motivation. He had terrible grades and a pathological temper that led him to almost kill his friend over a trivial matter. With God's help and his mother's determination, Ben turned his life around. A good-quality model diesel locomotive will pick up electrical power from all eight or 12 wheels and will be geared on all wheelsets, or "trucks," for the best pulling power. Avoid traction tires as these contribute little to performance.
If you're purchasing a train set with a steam locomotive, make sure the locomotive picks up power from as many wheels and drivers as possible. Preferably, the tender should assist in power pickup, as this locomotive's does.
The locomotive is the heart of any train set. The key features to look for in a model locomotive are:
Diesel locomotives should have all-wheel electrical pickup and at least eight-wheel drive.
* Steam locomotives should pick up electricity from the drivers and the tender wheels.* Flywheels are good to have as part of the drive mechanism on a diesel locomotive. Flywheels help the locomotive operate more smoothly and negotiate dirty track better.* Avoid traction tires. These little rings of rubber around some locomotive drivers and wheels are intended to overcome poor adhesion. However, the cure is almost always worse than the disease. Traction tires contribute to an irritating wobbling and also can't pick up electricity.* While they may be appealing, inexpensive steam locomotives generally won't run as well as inexpensive diesels.
