This design by John Baldessari makes excellent use of line, positive and negative space, as well as contrast. Baldessari uses line within the background of design, which is actually a print of a movie still. The linesthat lay over the figures in the background help to add a greater sense of depth to the design by overlapping the obscured figures. These lines also help create a sense of positive and negative space. The white lines and figures in the print move forward, while the black areas, like the windows of the structure behind them, become negative space that recedes toward the back. Baldessari also uses shape and color to create a very nice contrast to help add interest to the design. He placed several colored circles over the faces of the figure, turning these individuals into simple figures. He then uses a large shape of a tiger jumping through a loop that creates a very nice contrast that adds a lot of interest to the design. The bright colors of these shapes all move to the foreground and add even more depth and variety to the design. I like Baldessari's design choice to use the tiger. It makes it seem as if these faceless figures are viewing the tiger leaping through the loop, and the colors tie the background image into the foreground, while still adding variety. Overall the design uses a lot of elements well to create a very appealing design.- Matt Hockensmith
