Comments on the course
I think the video critiques were one of the best things about this course because you can see the effects and changes that are made. I can't imagine this class without video critiques because of how essential it is. I find that my drawings have been looser over the course of the class. The biggest thing for me was to hold the pencil properly. During the first week I was still holding it as if I were writing rather than holding it further toward the eraser. It really helped me loosen up and remember I'm drawing.
I have learned much more about drawing overall. My skills have certainly advanced throughout the course and I have started picking up on how to apply details better. Things like light source and volume are certainly still very difficult but I'm certainly much more relaxed in approaching the subject. Overall, I managed to loosen up a lot in my approach. I used to get so tense about drawing at all but even my final looked great. I could actually see myself in the drawing.
By far the most useful portion of class was the video critiques from the professor. Without the depth of commentary and illustration of where to fix areas of work the impact just wouldn't have been nearly as high otherwise. Thanks Professor!
I found all of it interesting. I only wish I could be in a classroom for courses like this. To see someone add volume, create for, etc. It would help so much to have that one on one interaction with students and professors alike. In terms of art classes, its the only thing missing for me in this online realm. I tend to need someone who can watch over my shoulder and walk me through something first.
With luck, I will take everything I've learned to the next level and keep improving as I go.
I will say that I felt exposed to A LOT of great information and content in the form of the textbooks and the links you (Professor Prentice) provided us with. Also, you are the first prof. I've had that individually critiqued each work. That was invaluable as you could cater to our individual strengths and weaknesses.
I really enjoyed this class. It has been hard with my schedule to find the time to do assignments, and some of my drawings have suffered because of that. I always considered human anatomy to be one of my weak points in drawing and I really think classes that focus on the structure, form and drawing of the human form are priceless in knowledge. I definitely think that UAT should have more classes, or more in depth classes concerning human anatomy, because it is so vital to everything that you create for film, games, concept art, etc. I think my skills have really improved over the past 5 weeks and look forward to continuing to develop these newly added skills in my artwork. I would definitely like a move more towards digital production though as that is the current form of the industry. Learning how to properly draw and techniques for drawing human form through Digital Paint programs would be ideal. This of course once the basics are covered in a class like this. I know UAT is not an ART school, but I think there is a lot of advantage of teaching the newer mediums. Thank you Jeff for your input as well as your needed and truthful critiques!
Agreed, video critiques should become mandatory at UAT. Another professor, Orlando with UAT does them for his Maya classes and they literally saved my grade in both courses. They were very much appreciated here. I can't imagine the amount of work that goes into making 3-5 minute videos breaking down their work entails, but it is invaluable to the student, at least I thought so.
