Note on frames and borders

The way you reference the edge of the picture plane is called 'framal reference'. Is the comp a window on the world allowing elements to reference a space outside the frame? Or is it a contained world, like looking into a cigar box?
Too often in our creations it is the latter - and the designs and drawings end up not taking advantage of the possibilities of a larger, inferred space.
