Subject: Bob's Port
Attachment: RBall-Port-Wk5.jpg
Message: Ok I have updated my portfolio. I have shrunk it down some so that it will be less cumbersome to view. The images are all close together except for the last 2 (new) images. I gave them some space so that they could be viewed separately without distraction from prior images. Each image has a description and a listing of type faces used. I am not that good with wording things but I still have time to polish stuff up some. I set up this file in Photo Shop to save time. I have started to put together a PDF portfolio and this is working out real nicely. The disadvantage to presenting a portfolio as a jpeg is that image detail is lost and text really suffers. I guess jpeg format would be the only way to set up a web site port and a PDF would limit that some. I like detail and was very tempted to post a couple of close ups of some of my work but that would not be a good idea for this. The overall design of my port is not very creative but perhaps once I get deeper into the creation of a PDF I will improve on that.

Subject: Terri's Rough Draft
Attachment: TMichalski_RoughDraft.jpg
Message: Attached is my rough draft, posted in spreads again. For this version I have re-ordered things a bit and touched up the text. Let me know what you think. I have been working mostly on tweaking the portfolio and the pieces, though I have done a sample print of a few of these pages for my 8.5 x 11 portfolio. The prints from my desktop photo printer came out very nicely so I do not think I will need to run this version at Kinko’s. I am still working out the details for the larger portfolio. I am worried about messing up on the mounting and not being able to fine the same black paper, so before I start with that one I am shopping around trying to find comparable black paper. I do have a question about whether it is really necessary to include a table of contents. I personally do not see the need for this in either the digital or flat formats as it just amounts to an additional page. What does everyone else think? I also have to say that, now that we are on the verge of graduation, I am getting more and more nervous about the job search. I think what is most nerve-wracking is that I am considering going the freelance route, which can mean a lack of steady income, but I think it will offer more opportunities as well. I do like the idea of a steady position, it has more security, but a steady position can also mean that you develop a routine and grow stagnant. There are pluses and minuses to both, so I guess I will just have to work this one out on my own. Thanks!

Message: the best thing to do ( i find) is read the mags I have been recommending (how, print, comm arts) and see what path the successful designers have taken - for example there was a big article on one of the hottest designers now- peter buchanan-smith - where he went to school, what he has published, who he has worked for - and it was interesting because after i read about his book "speck" that he published as a student I happened to see it on sale at B and N and picked it up -
freelance is good for certain things like building a broad client base - but there are no bennies or other perks...working for a company can be a dead end OR it may lead to working up the ladder to an art director position...u dont need a TOC...and the port looks great and is beautifully presented - BTW AIO helps u find work dont they?

Subject: John's final portfolio
Attachment: JD_final_portfolio_strip.jpg
Message:Okay this has seriously kicked my butt. I had technical difficulties as well so I couldn't properly resize the images the way I needed to, which means some of them are kind of crappy looking. It's going to have to be something I go back to and redo as soon as my computers are worked on, which will be right after this class is over.Anyway I finally settled on a way to present everything after much experimentation and frustration. Still needs tweaking but it'll do for the moment. For the photo montage pieces, I included thumbnails of the original images used, and I regarded some of the Navistar pieces as montages, which I hadn't done previously even though they are technically montages. I will also be changing the way each page is labeled for the real portfolio, rather than the way they are labeled now which is per the directions from Week 1 (i.e. Digital Layout versus Editorial Ad, etc.)I found that the images aren't as crappy looking if I save the strip as a PDF, so I will post it that way as well after I post this JPEG. Another reason is because I discovered some minor errors in the JPEG version which are corrected in the PDF version.I will have to get in the critiques etc. after work on Friday, sorry. This part just took way longer than I had hoped it would. I haven't had a chance to print it all out for the flat portfolio either, though I have all the materials. That may also have to wait until my computers are working properly.okay enough rambling....

Message:i think it looks great - you added image info, and i like the white against blue - you get both color AND nuetral bg.and i like the addition of the cover page - it lets me segue into hokkaidoId make the big sideways labels grey or 50% opacity instead of black - the bigger the text, the more powerful it becomes and it starts to conflict with the image - comps are like being in a band - sometimes one guy has to turn down his amp (: JP

Attachment: TMichalski_FinalPortSpreads.jpg
Message:I am posting this in two ways, one as spreads (833 K) and one as single pages(1.86 MB), this way you all can see both details and how it flows in booklet format as intended. I did not make all that many changes to this presentation, just small tweaks in alignment and such, though I have been thinking about making more revisions like looking at a landscape format and expanding the corporate identity pieces to each be one spread on their own so that I can include a few of the other collateral pieces that were created for each. But that is all for another day.Thank you everyone for all of your help in putting this together. If you ever need anything, feel free to drop me a line! Thanks!Terri

Message:looks great - I feel as if I am leafing thru the april edition of communication arts (:nice use of nuetral colors and playful typography for the labels. The grid is utilized well for organizing all that info - I like the right and left justifying of the desc text...there is a lot of work here! The overlapping is smart for displaying all the brochure and identity work - JP
