Thank you very much. I have decided I'm going to try and do a similar picture with my other two children as well.
Thank you so much for being a great instructor. You have really helped me to grow as an artist. I feel very much more confident in my skills now. Thanks again.

Hello Jeff Prentice, this is Jonathan Huls.

You were my Design and Technology teacher during my time at Art Institute when I strove for the Digital Design diploma. Searching through Google, I found your web site and noticed that many examples are still being used from that class and would like to say that I am honored to see my example still posted.

As I mentioned in the class, your methods were great for the online student, and to this day it is in the top 3 classes that I enjoyed. I am currently going for my Bachelors degree in Graphic Design and am pleased that you were a part of it.

Thank you. :)

Thank you Jeff. I will work on these areas and hopefully improve upon them in the future. Thank you for all of your help in this class. I have really learned a lot. I plan to keep practicing and improving.

Hi Jeff,

I have enjoyed every minute of this class. I have learned a lot from you. I appreciate all of your comments and critiques.

Your student gallery is a great help. I really enjoyed viewing all of the other students work. It helped tremendously to understand what was expected. I saved your web site to my favorites and plan on checking it out often. Thanks again for all the help. I feel like I have learned so much.

Thanks Jeff!

It's been great. I had a blast "adventuring" into the feild of still life and portraiture. It was scary at first, but I'll be able to cope with it now :P

I also wanted to say thanks for the website you put together. I like to veiw some assignment examples before I post my own, just to get a grip on what is expected and whatnot, and it really helps.

Good luck in all your endeavours!

Hi Jeff I have had a great time learning from you and my classmates. (by critique and/or suggestions) I actually enjoy the crits. because I have a tendency to overlook things sometimes. I will use everything I learned from you and the class to my advantage. Thanks for everything. And yes you all pushed hard enough and in the right direction. I think with a little more reading and some more time I will improve even more. I will definitely stay in touch.

Mr. Prentice,

I just wanted to jot a quick note telling you how much I appreciated your class. I must admit that at the beginning of the course I was really starting to second guess my artistic abilities. It was an extremely unfamiliar and uncomfortable feeling to not „get it‰ at first. I had to lick my wounds several times in the beginning! =) But now after six weeks, I understand that you were simply trying to stretch us and make us grow as students and budding artists. I can compare it to military basic training, where the drill sergeants break us down so they can rebuild us stronger. In much the same way, I believe that you had to break us of our old habits, ways of seeing things, and the symbols that we have been so ingrained with, in order to show us how to draw and see things correctly.

I appreciate the effort that you have put in as an instructor, and much like parenting- although you don‚t always get to be Mr. Nice Guy, you have shown us the correct way to do things. So, thank you! I honestly do appreciate it and I believe that I will benefit from all that you have taught us in many ways.

Thanks Again,

Kamra Conn

Hello, Voni,

This was my first time teaching Graphic Symbolism this session and I had occasion to seek the advice of both Jeff Prentice and Garry McKee. I just wanted to put in a good word for them and let you know how great they were in lending their time and advice to me regarding questions I had about the class and students.  It was invaluable assistance and they were always so prompt, amiable and willing to help. You have a great group of people in your department!

Thank you,

Pat Pacoe

In the future...

Hey Jeff =)
I was wondering whether or not you would mind it if I occasionally sent you a design that I might be stuck on for some input. I've never had a teacher who's so spot-on with advice, not even after 4 years of intense, scrutinizing daily critique sessions in high school.
Hopefully I'll have you as a facilitator in other design related classes but if not, I'd love to keep in touch. But I completely understand if time constraints wouldn't allow for it.
Either way, thank you so much for your excellent approach to this wacky online teaching concept (your website with examples is something I think every teacher should do)!
=)

Hello Jeffrey, first off I would like to apologize for not being at 100% in your class. Second, I would like to say that I appreciate your honest feedback and your encouragement and help with areas that I asked for help, ie tutorials, web links, etc. You have been the first eye-opening professor that I have encountered so far, not just giving out a grade to be giving a grade, but giving grades that were deserved. Also for validating the importance of time needed to achieve the goal that I have set for myself (participating). My biggest challenge was the week 5, which we both know was horrid, thank you for being understanding of the personal things that got in the way of my studies. I did learn a lot in your class and do plan on reviewing the text and studying the lectures which I printed out. Thank you again for all of your help, Debbie

16 Jun 07 6:25 AM MST

Hi Jeffrey,

Thank you a hundred times over. The site you suggested is fantastic in showing other ways to present information without all the text blocks. I have appreciated your comments and direction more than words can say. You have inspired me and guided me these past weeks and the challenge to change my ways of laying things out awaits me.

I have saved multiple sites from these weeks and of the classes so far I have appreciated you the most. You presented the rules in clear simple terms, but most of all you held us accountable. I have a soap box titled accountability, and it is good to see that there are leaders out there practicing this skill to a younger generation.

Thank you and may life bring you all the best.

Thank you!

Jeff,

I just wanted to tell you again how much I appreciated what you did for me in the Color Theory class. I truly appreciated it when we had to do a scan into photoshop for our first assignment in Basic Drafting. I learned so much more than just Color Theory in your class! I now have the confidence to tackle whatever comes and the Photoshop knowledge to back it up.

Thanks again!

"Jeffrey is an excellet teacher. He's probably the best I've had since I've been attending AIO. He's truely dedicated to creative education, and it's clear that he wants to do it well. I would definitely look for him in taking another class. He's very valuable as a teacher for AIO."

I think that Jeffrey Prentice is an exceptional teacher. Not only did he really care what was going on in my life, but he made an effort to take his teaching to another level. His tutorial site and videos made things a lot easier to understand. HE is amazing, and I hope I get to take classes taught by him in the future."

Hi Jeff,

I just wanted to share this with you and let you know how useful your contributions are to a lot of us.

I’m planning to make some suggestions for temporary fixes to the curriculum and one of the things I have started with is adding video demos as you commented on to me briefly awhile back. I think it’s great that you’ve allowed access to your demos to some of the facilitators...I think this would go a long way toward keeping persistence levels up as we loose many students to difficulties with these concepts.

Have a good one!

Jeff,
Thank you! Your suggestions are excellent--ideas I never considered and have never been suggested before. I really do appreciate the time you took to look at my work. I value your opinion more than any other facilitator I've had in this program, (and I finish in 3 weeks--yea!). Your suggestions are specific, imaginative, and it's clear you are a skilled and experienced designer.

Here is my final submission for this class. It was very difficult to capture and then execute, but in the end it was well worth it.

I'd like to thank everyone for their feedback and kindness through this learning process, everyone in this class made hitting the post button so much easier. All of you were a ton of help and I am very happy to share this learning experience with you all. I hope to see you all in future classes.

I'd also like to thank Jeffrey for making this class a terrific learning experience. Your guidance and resources helped me through all of my projects. Hopefully I will be in one of your future classes.

Good luck to everyone and Happy Holidays!

Hi Jeffrey, it has been a pleasure and a great challenge being in this class. I attended college previously and obtained my Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering. Toiling with that degree was an extreme challenge with very little or no happiness whatsoever.

So far, pursuing this degree has been a much different experience. I am challenged, that is true. The furiosity of the project deadlines are a little intimidating and can be difficult to keep up with. BUT, I am having a GREAT time and learning so much. I am truly excited to finally be pursuing a program of study that I am interested in and that nurtures my creative spirit.

Thank you so much for your instruction and feedback. It is greatly appreciated!

This project was most difficult logistically, but one of my favorite subjects. I could stare at my boys all day and it was nice not having to look at myself for a change.

I wanted to thank everyone for a wonderful experience. I can't tell you how much I learned from you and how much I loved viewing your works. I wish all of you the very best and hope to see many of you in future classes. I'm off to Color Theory and Speech (how that's done online I'd like to know) next session.

A special note to Jeff. Thanks for making this college course really feel like a college level course. I worked harder than I have in any of my previous courses and saw wonderful benefits from it. Thanks for the constant support and the occasional nudge when necessary. I've book marked your web site for future classes and hope to work with you again.

Happy Holidays!

I love a challenge, especially when it has to do with design. Of the three years I've been at AI, You are the third teacher who has challenged my design skills and have commented on what feels like every one of my assignment posts. Here's the signed release form. My apologies for it being so late! And thank you, I'd have to say that this is one of the best compliments I've ever recieved and your compliments and encouragement are very reassuring because for the most part, I doubt myself and how good my work is. lol, you could say I'm rather thick-skulled and in constant denial about it.

Thanks for writing, I didn't realize it was 2 days late, I thought it was only one day late. The time difference was confusing for me, we had issues here on the island when we got here. Its not excuses, I know the assignment was late. I am hoping to do better this week. The 65 hit me hard. Its not like me. Thaks for the email again, not many professsors put in the effort you do.

Scott's Assignment 3

To be perfectly honest this has been the most challenging class I’ve taken so far with AIonline. Jeff you have pushed me farther than any other facilitator has since I started taking classes. This of course has helped me to try and achieve a higher mark but has also made me a little crazy at the same time! :0) All in all I’d say this course has stretched me beyond my boundaries and my comfort zone and caused me to set the bar a little higher.

I’ve not really ventured out into the realm of CDs and product packaging a whole lot in my limited experience but this course has helped my to understand the importance of constructing a design around necessary elements such as bar codes as well as legal, manufacturer, and distributor information. One hard knock I took was with the organization of files and images. Most of the time I’m a pretty organized person but this was the largest project I’ve ever done and has had the most elements. Right off the bat my files were scattered and it wasn’t until the third week that I was able to get things organized into something more proficient to work with. This caused me to use valuable time sifting thru a mess of files and took away from the design and development process.

I’ve done a lot of work with different filters and effects that Photoshop has to offer and I’ve used the saturation, brightness, and contrast tools a little as well. What I’ve not done is used the more in depth tools to fine tune color, contrast, brightness, and levels nor have I done a lot of work with channels either. I did a little of this with this project but beyond that I’ve been tweaking a experimenting with photos and other images to get a feel and understanding of what these tools have to offer. It’s been a challenging five and a half weeks and it has truly been a growing process.

Jeff, I just wanted to say thank you, again -

In the context of an entirely online classroom format, where interaction is limited to faceless text and forums, thanks for being the
most human professor I've had so far...I really appreciate it.

Hey Jeff,
I just wanted to send you a note to let you know how much I *cough* loved your class LOL! No really, I did learn alot from this course. I appreciate you being hard on me and chewing my designs up and spitting them back out..better than they were originally. I really am a visual person, and you taking the time to re-work my designs and showing how they could have looked..well..it really helped me "to get it " better. I just hope that all that I have learned in this class with pay off in the future :)
Again, thanks for your input and structure of this class. It made me to be more diciplined in my school work to meet the deadlines and due dates. IT WAS HARD! LOL This was my first class run that rigid and I totally understand why you did it that way. Hats off to you ways of teaching :)

I wish you tons of blessings in the future..cause I don't believe in luck LOL!

Why don't you try putting the easel on a table so that you don't have to kill yourself while you are drawing? Your instructions were very clear and I could understand every thing you said. Are you going to do more videos similar to this one? Val

I really think you have a good thing going here. It really helped me to understand the horizon line concept lot better by being able to watch you actually draw it right there in front of me. I was having a hard time understanding all of the lines that were being drawn not only by you but by the others in class. was very confluzed (no I didn’t misspell that, I meant to write it that way ;D ) but the video helped me a lot. Thanks! Your not doing those for this class right? They are for another class you are teaching? Can we use them too? I think it would benefit the whole class especially for those of us who are visual learners. I think that is the only thing that has really frustrated me about taking these classes online . I am a very visual learner. I have a problem understanding what I am supposed to be doing unless I can see it being done. Thank goodness my sister has a degree in graphic design and she has already done all this. I ask her all the time to show me examples of techniques.

I guess I didn't realize how little I have been posting dicussion and critique statements. I have been trying really hard on my drawings and it would appear I have been neglecting all of the other aspects of class. I am glad to finally have the format and size thing right finally. I guess I was just stressing that because I tried really hard and I was not getting it right. I promise from now on i'll get it right. I have been posting comments for this week and will post more tomarrow. I saw that I missed the due date on the disscusion questions, I was to worried about my drawings. Should I send my answers to you via E-mail? Well thank you for the wake up call and I look forward to hearing your critique of my latest drawing. More lessons!! I think it made the experience more personal. We all can read a book or watch a quick animation. That showed me different tips to add detail to my work and an easier way to do it. Thanks for the time. Kefah

Hi Jeff,

It worked. I agree with Hilfred. It is nice a teacher takes the time to do things like this.

Thanks Jeff,

Since attending the Art Institute online, I haven't had a teacher take some time out like this to create a tutorial. It was very helpful and I finally got to see what one of my instructors look like.

The tutorial on sighting is great, I learned alot that I was never taught. I was wondering if you could do a tutorial on shading cloth or paper?

1. In your own words, describe your experience with sighting.

I am glad that I am not the only one that has had problems with sighting. I actually had no idea what was being talked about when I first heard about sighting. After reading and seeing the instructional video that Jeff made I realized that it was something that I did already although I didn't do it very well or correctly. I have a hard time transferring the image I measured to the paper. I always try to make the images the same size that they actually are instead of making them smaller so they will fit on the paper. I think I am getting the idea and technique down though.

Hi Jeff, I know it has been a long while, you probably don't remember me with all the students you encounter. I had you for drawing back in November, then emailed you a painting when I was in color theory. I was just reminicing over my beginning classes and popped my head into the old threads. I wanted to say that through all the classes I have had here, drawing has been my favorite still and you have been, like the best instructor I have had. I have been working hard through all the classes and my drawing is getting better and better. I have taken everything I learned from you into all of my drawings and sketches. I just thought I would say hello and hope all is well, still in Mexico? Again, thanks for being such an inspiration and great instructor. Do you have a website to visit? Take care,

Stephanie Timbrook

Jeff,

I appreciate it that you informed us. Because of the structure of the class, a professor could have just done his own thing and the class would have suffered. I will continue to give as detailed feedback as possible in your absence. I feel like I am really growing in the class even though I am working through a lot of hard personal issues elsewhere. Thank you for being a dedicated teacher.

Sincerely,
Pamela deForest

I'm sorry if my comments were not clear.  Actually, just so to be sure that things are not misconstrued I will send another note to Danielle about you.  Sometimes its hard to understand when things are just written.

There are two instructors that I have had throughout my experience at AIO that I have found to be very involved and provide solid feedback.  You are one of the two and I really do appreciate your input. I actually have found the two classes with you to be the most fun from a subject perspective (although the most difficult, for me, from a technology angle :).

Chris
